Q: Why “disconnect”?
A: There’s a two part answer to this.
The first part is that I think the fitness industry is, at this point, fundamentally broken. Misinformation, ableism, fatphobia, queerphobia, racism, gatekeeping, financial barriers… The list goes on and on, and it’s clear that these industries are largely disconnected from the people they’re meant to serve. But it doesn’t have to be that way.
The second answer is because I have EDS and my bones are tenuously connected at best.
Q: Why do I need a personal trainer?
A: Technically, you don’t.
Not the answer you were looking for?
Ok, fine: it depends.
The answer isn’t the same for everyone, nor is the solution. Maybe you’ve never been active and you’re not sure where to start. Maybe you have been, but it was a long time ago, or before a health change. Maybe you really hate the gym and have been told that’s the only way – it’s not! Whatever the reason, my goal is to help.
Q: Why you?
A: At the risk of sounding redundant, it depends. I may be the right fit for you and your goals/needs, and I may not.
I hope I am.
I do take my client relationships and programming very seriously, and that means a lot of time spent on each individual. I’m very client-led in my programming, have direct, personal experience with connective tissue and pain disorders, and I’m happy to work with a variety of equipment, ability, and interest-based restrictions.
Q: What are your qualifications?
A: In addition to my CPT and Nutrition certification, I have specialized training in corrective exercise, exercise recovery, strength and conditioning, and transformation.
I’ve also been an off and on gym goer since I was 11 and participated in a number of team and solo sports, so I’ve gotten to work with a number of fitness and health professionals over the years.
On an even more personal front, as someone living with EDS and a myriad of comorbidities, I have a lot of firsthand experience with the pain points of the fitness and health industries.
Q: Who do you work with?
A: My main focus area is people with hypermobility and other mobility-based issues who are looking to build and expand their physical abilities. More broadly, my goal is to help people the industry typically overlooks and/or blatantly ostracizes.
The only real restriction is that I do not offer training for minors. I’m sorry. I know some of you are really cool. It’s a safety thing for both of us. I’m also probably not the best option for traditional athletes or bodybuilders, nor do I work with weight loss as a training goal.
Q: Are you going to tell me I can’t/have to-
A: No.
There are very few exclusions to that, and they pretty much all pertain to safety.
My job is to educate you on good, safe methods of achieving your goals, but I can’t make your decisions or do your workouts for you.
You have to live in your body. You have to decide if the potential tradeoffs are worth it for you.
Q: What kinds of training do you offer?
A: I offer self-directed training plans and both virtual and in-person live training. For more details, see the Personal Training section of the Services page.
Q: How much does it cost?
A: It depends. I try to be holistic in my rates as much as possible, and offer discounted rates for financially-disadvantaged clients.
Q: Do you offer couple/group rates?
A: Sure. Send me a message via the Contact page and we can work something out!
Q: What kinds of payments do you accept?
A: Cash is always king, but I also take Venmo, PayPal, CashApp, and can accept just about any other payment method via Stripe. I do not take checks, crypto, NFTs, etc.
Q: What if I have other questions?
A: Shoot me a message via the Contact page or on social media. I’ll be more than happy to answer.
Q: How do I get started?
